Course Description

LitQuest’s intensive writing workshop is a process-oriented class in which students will learn to draft, edit, revise, rewrite, & refine their writing. Each week, students will be required to draft a new (genre-specific) essay or revise their writing from the previous week per teach/peer feedback. Attendance in the course will not only prepare students with the core skill building in mechanics, usage, and construction necessary to excel in high school level composition, but will also lay the foundation for their success with more rigorous and complex work in the future across all subject areas.

What to Expect?

Each week, Ms. Moss will introduce students to a new genre of writing while building fundamental habits that apply to academic writing as a complete discipline. In addition, students will receive feedback for all their written homework, which they are to document in their “Personal Record of Writing Skills” sheet, included as part of your Welcome Package. Parents may keep track of student progress by reviewing their student’s Personal Record of Writing Skills, with Ms. Moss and LitQuest staff ready to provide detailed clarity in response to any questions. Over the course of the next ten weeks, your students will learn the following genre-specific components in conjunction with the latter conventions and habits.

Academic Genre Cognition

  • Narrative (Brainstorming, Outlining, Word Choice)

  • Informative (Drafting Thesis Statements & Topic Sentences)

  • Expository Essay (Organizing Ideas for Clarity/Coherence, Concrete Details & Commentary)

  • Expository Essay (Effective Introductions and Conclusions)

  • Persuasive Essay (Rhetoric and Strategies in Argument and Craft)

  • Literary Analysis (Direct Quotes and Internal Body Paragraph Coherence)

  • Literary Analysis (Commentary x2 vs. Concrete Detail)

6 Traits of Writing for Revision

  • Ideas: Coherence, Avoiding Redundancy, and Applied Critical Thinking

  • Organization: Body Paragraph Development

  • Word Choice: Verbs, Vague Pronouns, Variety

  • Sentence Fluency: Sentence Structure Variety, Transitions, Syntax, Dangling Modifiers

  • Grammar: Proper use of Commas, punctuating for style and individual voice

  • Voice: Genre Specific Diction & Tone

NOTICE: On Monday, March 18th, LitQuest will send a “Welcome Package” that contains a set of files to help prepare your student for their class, including a “Zoom Access” file that will grant entry to the online classroom throughout the course of the term.
